KAUAI — Rain or shine, ILWU shows up to play! On September 29, 2018, four teams gathered to play in the 33rd Annual Statewide Softball Tournament. It did not stop raining throughout all four tournament games at Anne Knudsen Ball Park, but the members remained in good spirits.
Game 1: McCabe Oahu vs. Hawaii Stevedores Inc. (HSI) Oahu
McCabe took a strong lead at the start of the game with two runs and HSI scoring one run. HSI scored two runs in the second inning to tie the game at 3-3. McCabe rallied with a run in the third and fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead. McCabe rode that momentum to a big six run 7th inning outburst to win the game 11-3.
Game 2: Hawaii vs. Maui
As the rain continued, Hawaii scored three quick runs in the first four batters. Hawaii held Maui scoreless for five innings. The Big Island added one run in the fifth inning and platted two more in the sixth inning to take a 6-0 lead.
Things took a turn for Maui at the bottom half of the sixth inning. After the first batter flied out, the next eight batters had a base hit with the last two that were doubles. Maui’s big rally scored eight runs and they held Hawaii scoreless in the last inning to finish the game. Final score: 8-6.
Game 3: Hawaii vs. HSI
The game for third place ended in mercy rule 10-run game. HSI pounded out 18 hits in 4 innings to win the game 11-0. The big inning was the third inning where HSI had ten straight hits and scored seven runs.

Awards
The Awards Banquet was held at the ILWU Kauai office. Kauai Sports Coordinator Chad Pacheco provided a bountiful buffet for the players who were starving after playing for four hours in the rain. Sports coordinator Tristie Licoan (Hawaii), Brian Tanaka (Oahu) also assisted. A big mahalo to Chad and a special thank you to Tristie for keeping score during the tournament.
