Your ILWU Political Action Committee (PAC) looks carefully not just at the candidates running for office, but also at county charter amendments and makes voting recommendations on them. Your union understands that busy working families do not always have time to research each issue on the ballot and wants to make sure you are informed about the ILWU's position on these issues.
What are charter amendments?
County charters set the rules and responsibilities of county government, including the make- up of the county council, how many employees are hired in county offices, and the duties and functions of important departments such as planning, police, water supply, and transportation. County charter amendments generally modify administrative policies and procedures, but may even have the ability to make political changes -- for example, by providing more transparency in county decision-making. Do not skip over these sections on your ballot even though they are lengthy. We have included each charter amendment by category for convenient referencing and to take
the guesswork out of answering them.
Support union recommendations
Voting is something our members can do to improve their work, family and community life. In the Primary Election, 89% of our endorsed candidates made it to the General Election. When we vote as a block for union-endorsed candidates, we give working people the power to have their voices heard.
