General Trades Industries

Many people who live in Hawaii know that the ILWU organized thousands of sugar, pineapple and longshore workers across the state. But the ILWU has also helped workers in canneries and other industries referred as “general trades” earn union contracts since the 1940s.

Today, ILWU has over 60 general trades units accounting for almost half of its membership. ILWU members at these units include agricultural, automotive, landscaping, memorial park, credit union, golf course, grocery, transportation, healthcare, and other workers.
