STATEWIDE — Money talks. And here at ILWU Local 142, we like to make sure we walk the talk.

We strive to be a membership-driven union, so this is why the Local maintains a regular education program for its members; an educated membership is an empowered membership. Unit Treasurer Seminars in particular are held every three years for the diligent members who step up to this demanding role that requires great attention to detail and the utmost integrity.

Census coming in 2020

Want free money? That is basically what the census gets us.

Or, as Local Secretary-Treasurer Brian Tanaka phrased it, “There is $1.5 trillion worth of federal money to be distributed, and we want to make sure we get our share.”

All Hawaii needs to do to get a fair share of this money is answer the short set of questions in the census questionnaire that will be sent out to every household via mail by the US Census Bureau in March 2020.

Into a new decade
The census happens every ten years. The questions ask about your basic living situation, and other basic socio-economic information.

Using the information from these questions, we get money for things such as, our schools, fire departments, kupuna care facilities, and more.

Funding for the future
The more people participate in answering these questions, the better, more accurate portrait the US government has of Hawaii to give us money in the places we need most.

Every household will receive this in the mail come March 2020, so we are alerting you now about this and will remind you again in later months.

Not to fear
The responses you send back are strictly confidential and absolutely cannot and will not be shared for anything beyond research purposes for the money that will contribute to programming related to education, public health, disaster relief, and community assistance.
