HONOLULU- The "L" in ILWU is for longshore, but it can also stand for loyalty, especially when it comes to being dedicated to certain values and principles. The principle of taking care of the whole ILWU family guided the long- shore delegation at their statewide caucus that was held from February 22-25, 2022 at the ILWU Hall in Honolulu. "Our thought process for this week has to be for our future," said
Longshore Division Director Dustin Dawson addressing the general as- sembly on the first day of the caucus. "When we focus on what we can do for the next generation, and making a difference for not just ourselves, but the rest of Hawai'i, we cannot help but succeed." The ILWU contract that covers our longshore workers in Hawai'i and the West Coast expires in June. The last time contract negotiations and this caucus was held was in 2014.
The purpose of this caucus was for members from each longshore unit on every island to systematically go through proposals from their fellow workers. These proposals, most of them in line with the theme of secur- ing benefits for the future and juris- diction, serve as a foundational part of crafting their next contract. Solidarity from the West Coast The Hawaii Longshore Division's contract is patterned after the West
Coast's contract and the West Coast Caucus was held two weeks earlier than Hawaii's (see page 2 from The Dispatcher). All three International Titled Offi- cers (President Willie Adams, Vice President Bobby Olvera and Secre- tary-Treasurer Ed Ferris) from the ILWU International in San Francisco were present to offer solidarity and insight for the duration of the caucus. ILWU Vice President Bobby Olvera echoed Dawson's emphasis continued on page 8
