Longshore Industry

Longshore workers are the backbone of Hawai'i’s ports, ensuring the steady flow of goods that keeps our island communities thriving. ILWU Local 142 represents longshoremen and women who skillfully load and unload cargo ships, operate heavy equipment, and manage the movement of essential supplies across our harbors.

Nearly everything we use in Hawai'i — from food and clothing to cars and building materials — passes through the hands of these highly trained workers. Their work is critical to the state’s economy and the daily lives of everyone who calls Hawai'i home.

Being part of a union means longshore workers benefit from contracts that provide strong wages, safe working conditions, job security, and respect on the job. These hard-won standards help ensure the stability and sustainability of Hawai'i’s supply chain for generations to come.
