I humbly come before you in these times of economic uncertainty to express my appreciation in your undying support as one of your elected Business Agents for Maui Division for the last elected 7 terms. There can be no greater urgency then too maneuver our union to better meet the challenges that is before us. We need to preserve all we gained from our negotiations for all our members and families future.
I want to say a sincere mahalo to all of our units officers/stewards for their thankless time in assisting their fellow workers through one of the most difficult experience we have seen in decades. Changes of ownerships, landowner, managerial companies that is hard adjustment for everyone. Most wondering if their jobs, benefits are protected.
The ILWU banner has always been branded in my family for four generations from plantation to tourism. I emphasize to my children that almost everything we purchase is bought with hard earned-union money. They know without the union, they would not be able to enjoy a better opportunity and future. This is one of the greatest teaching not too lose site of.
I approved Solidarity,
JB De Mello

I have been a member of the ILWU for 39 years; I started off in HC&S in 1975, moved on to Ameron Maui in 1988 and became a business agent in 2003. Ever since then I have been a full time Business agent, representing our members in Construction; Trucking; Super Markets; Shipping; Sugar and Hotels at various times throughout those years. My goals have always been to build the Unit from the bottom up, by identifying reliable members within the Unit and encouraging them to be Officers and Stewards. I have always felt that a treee cannot flourish without healthly roots. I would consider it an honor to continue to serve our members as a business agent in the ILWU Local 142, Maui division. Mahalo.

Paula Phillips
Aloha Brothers and Sisters of the ILWU,
My name is Paula Phillips and I am running for the office of Business Agent –Maui Division.
I am a proud member of the ILWU. I joined in 2000 when I became employed at Hale Makua Health Services. I have been unit chair for the past 10 years, attended the last 3 Hawaii conventions as a delegate and have been in attendance & involved in all negotiations in the last 12 years at Hale Makua .
As a rank & file member, I know how hard these tough economic times have been for us all. Employers are using the recession to carve away at the gains we made during better times.
Our management pleaded financial distress and 6 positions in our unit were lowered from full-time to part-time with drastic reductions in benefits. I was one of the 6 affected, so I know firsthand what this does to our families. This encouraged me to run for office to prevent this from happening to any more of our brothers and sisters.
I am very motivated and looking forward to protecting the rights of the rank & file members on Maui.
