Oahu Business Agent Jose Miramontes presenting Ruby Shimabukuro from Unit 4405 Foodland and Nate Galario from Unit 4409 Island Movers with awards. The first portion of the meeting was dedicated to education. Representatives from the Department of Transportation gave a presentation on how to best abide by safety regulations. Great turnout from other units such as Matheson Tri-Gas, BEI, and Budweiser also showed up to learn.

HONOLULU — On November 15, 2019, Oahu Division held its last monthly Division Executive Board (DEB) meeting of 2019.

This past year, members have been consistently showing up in record numbers, so this was the first time in several years the Division held an awards night recognizing the units that had the biggest turnouts at all the DEB meetings.

Winners announced
The first award was for attendance for units with 0-100 members. Unit Chair Nate Galario accepted the award on behalf of Unit 4409 Island Movers.

Unit 4420 Hawaii Pacific Health won for attendance for units with 101-200 members.

The award for attendance for units with 201 + members was given to Unit 4405 Foodland, with Unit Secretary Ruby Shimabukuro accepting the award on their behalf.

Showing up is half the battle
Congratulations to these units that have members who understand implicitly that the DEB meetings are a one-stop shop for education, staying informed and camaraderie.

Clearly, this is reason enough for these units to have had members who not only kept showing up, but also brought more of their fellow members every time.

Power to the people
Oahu Division Director Mike Yamaguchi stressed the vital role our membership will play in the 2020 mayoral race and PAC in general.

Because just like these awards, elections are a numbers game. The momentum will hopefully not stop here, whether it is in meeting attendance or at the polls, too.

Scholarships for children of ILWU Local 142 members

Who was Harriet Bouslog?
The scholarship is named for the lawyer who represented ILWU Local 142 in the 1940s and 1950s.

She started this scholarship fund in 1989 to benefit the children and grandchildren of our members attending schools within the UH system.

Preference given to high school seniors
There are currently 52 kids in the program. A record 15 of them will be graduating in the spring.

There are ten guaranteed slots for high school seniors who apply. Preference is given to high school seniors, because ideally, Harriet’s vision was to provide a scholarship for all four years of school. Visit www.harrietbouslog. com for more information.
