Status Quo

What does “Status Quo” mean?
In union organizing, when someone refers to status quo, he or she is usually referring to the current benefits and working conditions that should remain in place until a first contract is negotiated. Federal law makes it illegal for the company to change the status quo.

When is “Status Quo” in Effect?
Status Quo takes effect when the petition is filed with the NLRB, and if you win the election it stays in effect until you have your first union contract. If you lose the election you are at will, the status quo requirement is no longer in effect, and the company can make changes to your wages, benefits and working conditions any time.
