Oahu Division Director

Candidate for Division Director
Dave K. Mori

On November 15 th -21st, Local 142 members will have the opportunity to vote for leaders to guide us for the next three years. This is the single greatest privilege any worker can have—the right to elect their leaders. The trust that will be bestowed upon these leaders will be enormous. They must have the expertise to negotiate against lawyers, the intelligence to
outwit executives, the aggressiveness to defend workers’ rights 24-7, and the compassion to dedicate their lives to our Union.

I have dedicated over half my life to serving our members. In 1976 I started my humble beginnings in the ILWU as a field worker at Oahu Sugar. I was first elected Unit Secretary/Treasurer in 1978, and was elected over the next 25 years to serve as Unit Chair, Division Trustee and Business Agent. I now ask for your support in my bid for Oahu Division Director.

My platform is simple as 1-4-2. Business Agents will service our members at least 1-time a month, have a minimum of 4-Unit Meetings and 2-Membership Meetings per year. We shall continue to mobilize and educate our members to ORGAINIZE the unorganized, to NEGOTIATE good contracts, and to PROTECT workers’ rights and benefits.

I am grateful to have been an ILWU member for thirty years. Because of the wages and benefits in our ILWU contract, my family and I enjoy a good, working class life in Hawaii.

As the years passed, I became Unit Chair, served on Negotiating Committees, as delegate to Local and International Conventions, and Local Executive Board member. In 1994, I was elected to be a Business Agent. I worked with Pineapple, Hotel, and General Trades units. I did some organizing and political action, as well as grievance handling and contract negotiations. I returned to Schuman in May, 2000, in order to spend more family time with my wife and daughter who is now six years old.

For the past three years, I have participated in Division and Local programs, and served as Oahu Political Action Committee Chair.

At this time of transition, I want to bring my experience to the LEB. Let us keep moving forward together. I humbly ask for your support.

I have been an I.L.W.U. member for over 30 years and have served at various levels and positions from the Unit, Division, Local and International.

I believe that the Union exists for the it’s members and that those who represent the members should do so with their best interest in mind. As an elected representative, our duties lie for the members. May the Union always be there to serve and protect it’s members.
