NLRB requires posting notice to inform workers of their rights

On January 30, 2009, just nine days after his inauguration, President Barrack Obama issued Executive Order 13496 which requires companies with federal contracts to inform employees of their right to organize and join unions. It also revoked Executive Order 13201 made by George W. Bush, which required federal contractors to inform unionized workers of their right to object to paying full union dues.

Legislative Priorities of 2012

This year, seven priority issues will guide the work of the ILWU during the 2012 Legislative Session. Some of our priorities have not changed from previous years. Issues like worker retention, supporting senior programs and protecting workers’ compensation still hold significance to the betterment of our lives.

Star Ka-Uionalani Medeiros was born in Honolulu on November 29, 1956. She was raised on Maui and graduated from Lahainaluna High School.

Hawaii Medical Center bankruptcy forces closure

The Hawaii Medical Center’s bankruptcy forced the closure of its Ewa and Liliha hospitals on January 4, of this year. Grievances were filed on 21-day notice, WARN Act and PTO payment for our members. The unit will move forward with the disbursement of the unit fund. It is unfortunate, not only for our members to lose their jobs, but for the community to lose its hospitals. State senators want to know how medical services have been affected with these closures.

Martin Luther King Day parade

Over 50 ILWU members, retirees, and family members marched in the January 21, 2013, Martin Luther King Day parade from Ala Moana’s Magic Island to Kapiolani Park. Dozens of unions, religious groups and community organizations march in the Honolulu event to celebrate Dr. King and his contributions to civil rights.
