The ILWU’s first contested election in 18 years has yielded a new leadership team led by International President Willie Adams, Vice President (Mainland) Bobby Olvera, Jr., and Secretary-Treasurer Ed Ferris. Incumbent Wesley Furtado was re-elected to a sixth term as International Vice President (Hawaii).
The “Constitution” sets the rules and policies by which this union is run. Local 142 members have the opportunity to amend or change the Constitution every three years at the Local Convention. If these changes are adopted by the Convention and ratified by the ILWU general membership, they become part of the rules that govern the union. Here are the Constitutional amendments adopted at this year’s Local Convention. Deletions are striked through, and additions are underlined.

Resolutions highlight where we have been and where we are heading as a union. The topics speak to the kind of values we aim to embody as working men and women within the Union. Here are brief summaries of the resolutions that were passed at this year’s Local Convention.
Travel the Hamakua Coast between Hilo and Honokaa, and you’ll see many communities that were once plantation camps housing sugar workers and their families: Pepeekeo, Kulaimano, Laupahoehoe, and Paauilo are some of the bigger ones.
PEARL CITY — Over 20 golfers from all divisions gathered on Oahu on September 1-2, 2018 for a weekend full of camaraderie and good sportsmanship. This year, players competed as teams, but golfed with members from other divisions at Pearl Country Club, a union house as one of Oahu Division’s units.
This arrangement created a great opportunity for fellowship across islands. Members from Pepsi on Oahu got to know their brothers from Kauai’s St. Regis Princeville, and other combinations created six teams of four (see photos).
This issue of the Voice of the ILWU is your official notice of the 2018 ILWU Local 142 Election. It contains the positions and candidates who will appear on the ballot and information on mail voting—including the mailing date, deadline for receipt, and who to contact if you need a ballot. This issue also contains statements and photographs submitted by candidates. ALL VOTING WILL BE CONDUCTED BY MAIL.
